Women often think that a facial toner does not have a substantial role in facial skin care and it is assumed that is enough to cleanse the skin with a suitable cleansing product and apply a face cream. In this way, women save both money and time, yet it turns out it is all for nothing as a facial toner is one of the most important products in facial skin care and without it skin care is not and cannot be wholesome.
What is pH Balance of the Skin and Why Is It Important?
A well-balanced pH level is a prerequisite for healthy skin. This slightly acid layer of the skin's surface is our body's protective mechanism against bacteria, preventing their reproduction. An increased pH level causes unfavourable micro flora, the skin becomes unprotected and is exposed to inflammation, dryness or oiliness.
To maintain healthy skin, it is important to balance the pH level to approximately 5.5. Water and cleansing cosmetics elevate the pH level of the skin. The pH level of tap water is 7–9, while that of cleansing products is 7–10.
Skin needs a long time (at least 5–12 hours) to restore the essential protective layer after washing. Hence, it is important to use skin care products (toners) with acid pH level (usually pH 3–6) after cleansing to help restore the protective mechanism of the skin faster.
How to Choose a Facial Toner?
First of all, facial skin toners are divided into two large groups – toners for all skin types and toners for a certain type of skin. Here comes the confusion — can I use a toner for all skin types or should I rather choose the one that is especially suited for my skin type?
A toner for all skin types will balance the pH level and refresh the skin, but it will not have a particular effect essential for various skin types. The result will certainly be better when using a facial toner developed especially for a certain skin type. A product that suits your skin type will not only balance the pH level and refresh the skin, but also provide a series of various additional benefits — it will help to prevent individual problems related to the skin type, e.g. dryness, oiliness, sensitivity, etc.
For example, a toner for oily skin will contain active substances that regulate the function of sebaceous glands, antibacterial substances, keratolitic substances that slightly peel the cells of the top layer of the skin preventing them from accumulating and blocking the pores. A toner for oily skin will definitely also contain alcohol, which removes excessive fats from the skin. A toner for normal, combined skin will contain ingredients that balance the function of sebaceous glands harmonizing the oily and dry zones of the face and refresh the skin. A toner for dry skin will contain substances that soften the skin and reduce irritation and an astringent feeling after washing.
Another important thing to consider when choosing a facial toner concerns the properties of the respective toner listed on the package — for toning, moisturizing, cleansing... When choosing a toner it is better to consider the skin type the product is meant for rather than the name of the product itself. The name of the product usually describes its effect but it can sometimes be misleading.
What Is the Proper Way to Use a Facial Toner?
It is the most popular question among the women who have said YES to a facial toner. Is it better to apply it with a cotton pad or with fingers?
There are two ways to apply facial toner properly.
1st method
Use a cotton pad dampened in the toner to make gentle movements along the natural cleavage lines of the skin (Langer’s lines) — from the chin along the cheek line upwards, from the centre of the forehead outwards, from the base of the neck upwards towards the chin. Be gentle, do not stretch the skin. Take the time for yourself and do not forget to take care of the small spots under the tip of the nose, at the hairline and the earlobes.
2nd method
Pour a small amount of the toner onto your palm, then dampen both palms with the toner and apply the toner to the face and the neck by gently massaging the skin, moving along the natural cleavage lines of the skin. This way of application will initially require some skills and practice.
It is important to remember that toner should not be applied to the more sensitive parts of the skin like the area around the eyes and to the lips!
Facial Toner – For a Wholesome Skin Care Program
It turns out that the use of a facial toner is not only a necessary but even an irreplaceable step in the facial skin care program! No other facial skin care product can do what the toner does and this is exactly why it is so important not to omit this so frequently forgotten step of facial skin care. One way or the other — women who take care of their skin in the proper way have been convinced that is not worth saving money or time by omitting any of the facial skin care steps. Cleansing, toning, moisturizing can only work in a wholesome way if used together — the facial skin needs to be cleansed, then toned and only then deeply moisturized with a suitable skin cream.
Now it is for sure – the long winter and early spring chilliness is over, and this month we can celebrate the beginning of the summer season. However, the skin has not yet gained natural tan and might look slightly pale or grey. Fortunately we have created an effective and natural solution for this problem – decorative skin care cosmetics with mineral pigments!
What are nanoparticles? What is the role of nanoparticles in cosmetics and what are the risks of nanocosmetics? What is the “grey cloud” and how to avoid it?
Certificates of natural cosmetics. When buying natural cosmetics in a shop or on the internet, it is possible to see different certification standards and certification stamps on the products – ECOCERT, BDIH, The Soil Association and others. This month, MADARA explains what natural cosmetics certification is and which stamp is more reliable.
When talking about cosmetic products for eliminating the unpleasant aroma of sweat, it is important to understand the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants/deodorants.

Parabens are the most commonly used synthetic cosmetic preservatives that are found in nearly every cosmetic product — face, body, hair and child care products, deodorants and make-up products. Usage of parabens in natural cosmetics is prohibited as the data about their safety is ambiguous. At the end of 2010, Denmark announced a ban on the usage of several parabens in products for child care.
Humans have known alcohol for thousands of years. It has been used for various purposes: preparation of drinks, medicine, household and manufacturing. Due to its antiseptic qualities, alcohol has also become an essential ingredient in the production of organic cosmetics. And yet some consumers are worried that alcohol dries and irritates the skin. What is the reality?
A child’s skin is more delicate and sensitive than an adult's; therefore it needs especially appropriate cosmetic products.
Women often think that it doesn't matter what you use for make-up removal; what you apply to the face afterwards matters most. This myth, however, is flawed – the truth is that facial cleansing and products used for this are the most important steps in acquiring healthy and beautiful facial skin, as it is obvious that insufficiently or incorrectly cleansed skin will not be able to fully absorb the necessary substances even from the very best creams and serums, etc.
