Exosomes in skincare: let’s clear up 5 common myths
Exosomes are the new buzzword in skincare, often paired with big promises and, unsurprisingly, plenty of confusion.
So what are they really? Are they as futuristic as they sound? And what can they actually do for your skin?
To separate fact from hype, we asked skincare expert Darja Vintere to break down some of the most common myths about exosomes in skincare.

MYTH 1: Exosomes used in skincare are the same as medical or human exosomes
NO
While the word exosomes may sound clinical, the ones you’ll find in your serum aren’t like those used in medical treatments.
“The exosomes used in cosmetics are not the same as those used in medical procedures or clinical therapies,” explains Darja Vintere. “In medicine, they can be highly concentrated and designed for very different mechanisms of action.”
Cosmetic formulas use carefully stabilised exosomes. “They are adapted for safe use on the skin surface,” she adds.
MYTH 2: Exosomes act as active ingredients that directly change the skin
NOT QUITE
Unlike classic actives that do something directly to the skin, exosomes function more like tiny messengers.
“Exosomes work as signal carriers that help the skin activate its natural regeneration processes,” Vintere tells us.
“They don’t alter the skin itself. They support it so the skin can function better on its own.”
In other words, the goal isn’t to override the skin’s biology, but to help it work more efficiently.
MYTH 3: Exosomes penetrate deeply into the skin
NO
Despite their futuristic reputation, exosomes in skincare stay closer to the surface, supporting the epidermis aka the layer responsible for keeping moisture in and irritants out.
“Topically applied exosomes do not penetrate deeper dermal layers,” explains Vintere. “They support the epidermis by strengthening the barrier and improving communication between skin cells.”
And that surface support is more important than it might sound. As she notes, “A stronger barrier means better moisture retention, less sensitivity, a more balanced microbiome and skin that looks smoother and more even.”
For deeper delivery, aesthetic procedures like microneedling or mesoporation are typically required.
MYTH 4: Exosomes can alter skin cells or DNA
NO
It’s a myth that pops up often when skincare starts sounding a little too scientific. But cosmetic exosomes aren’t rewriting your DNA.
“They cannot change the DNA of skin cells or significantly restructure the cell nucleus,” Vintere reassures us.
“They work as signal carriers that encourage cells to optimise regeneration and renewal processes, but they do not affect genetic material.”
MYTH 5: Higher exosome concentration automatically means better results
NO
A bigger percentage on the product label might sound impressive, but skincare rarely works that way.
“A higher concentration alone does not guarantee a better effect,” explains Vintere.
Instead, effectiveness depends on the bigger picture. “The quality of the formula, the stability of the exosomes and how they’re combined with other active ingredients are what truly matter,” she says.
“To achieve visible, long-term results, the overall formula needs to be thoughtful and well-balanced.”
So what does exosome skincare actually look like?
Now that the myths are cleared up, let’s talk about the interesting part — carefully crafted formulas that actually put exosomes to work.
The Exosome Longevity Radiance Peptide Serum combines apple extract-infused exosomes with postbiotics and bioactive peptides to support firmness, enhance radiance and strengthen the skin barrier. Think of it as daily support for skin that wants to stay plump, resilient and glowing long term.
And if glow is your goal, the 5% Glycolic Glow Toner delivers. Powered by 5% glycolic acid and plant exosomes that enhance the delivery of encapsulated apple extract, it gently exfoliates, smooths uneven texture and brings dull complexions back to life.
The real power of exosomes lies not in the buzz, but in the formula. At MÁDARA, we harness them to help skin perform at its best over time.
